We exist to conserve “in situ” and “ex situ”.

Collaboration and Research

Lagos Zoo actively participates in nature conservation, both through ex-situ (outside the natural habitat) and in-situ (in the natural habitat) programs, and contributes to the reproduction of endangered species (EEPs) in partnership with EAZA. It collaborates on field projects directly with various NGOs and promotes environmental awareness campaigns among visitors.

EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquariums)

Established in 1992, this institution facilitates cooperation among the European zoo and aquarium community regarding education, research, and conservation objectives. It is also a member of WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums). Membership requires adherence to certain standards and obligations concerning breeding programs, ethics, quality in staff recruitment, environmental education, and other areas.

Hornbill nest adoption program

A project for the conservation of hornbills, located in Thailand and India, where deforestation and habitat fragmentation are a growing problem. The program's funding goes towards the construction of nest boxes for hornbills – birds that need large trees to nest. Lagos Zoo sponsors 3 nest boxes under this project.

Proyecto Titi

A conservation program in Colombia that aims to provide useful information to aid in the long-term conservation of the cotton-top tamarin and to develop advocates in the local community to promote conservation efforts in Colombia. Thanks to our collaboration in this project, we are members of the “Cotton-Top Tamarin Conservation Club”.

IOSF (International Otter Survival Fund)

IOSF is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation, protection, and care of otters around the world. Through the sale of otter-related merchandise, the Zoo contributes to this institution by donating the profits.

CRPL (Primate Rehabilitation Center in Lwiro)

Created in 2002 by two Congolese institutions: the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) and the Centre de Recherche in Sciences Naturelles (CRSN). Illegal hunting increased dramatically during the Second Congolese War (1998-2004), and a safe haven was created for orphaned primates to recover physically and physiologically from their ordeals. Lagos Zoo has already organized two fundraising dinners for this center and is planning a third, on World Chimpanzee Day, July 12th.

SANCCOB

SANCCOB is a non-profit organization whose main goal is to reverse the decline in seabird populations through the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured, abandoned, or oil-covered seabirds – especially endangered species such as the African penguin. Lagos Zoo donates money to this institution, in addition to organizing fundraising events.
